Sustainability + Smyle

Sustainability is part of our DNA. In 2012, we became one of the first UK agencies to gain ISO 20121 certification - event sustainability has been an important part of our culture ever since.

But, we know there’s still work to be done. In 2020, we committed to becoming the most sustainable creative agency in the world, tied to demanding improvement targets for 2025. We’re raising our game; defining a new business as usual – which means every Smyle activation now includes core sustainability practices.

Our squad of sustainability changemakers – is critical to achieving our 2025 mission. 

A dedicated team, drawn from across the agency, is inspiring and empowering every Smyler to transform the way they work. By so doing, we will drive the change needed to translate sustainability objectives into reality.

HASTE focuses the efforts of Planet Smyle in five key areas. 

HOME – From our office spaces and company policies, to equipment, consumables and utility providers, we are reducing the environmental impact of our workplace.

AWAYWe are seeking better, more planet-friendly ways to transport people and equipment to achieve our 2030 net-zero emissions target.

SOURCE – We are evolving our design approach to incorporate circular economy principles, sustainable materials for production items, scenic build, merchandise, print and packaging.

TRADEWorking with our collaborators, suppliers and partners we are doing all we can to transition to a more sustainable model through collaborative working, partnership and innovation.

ENGAGEInternally, we’re driving change through training and communication. Externally, we’re working to engage with all stakeholders, including clients (through Cycle), our industry (as founding members of isla) and beyond (such as our support of the Terra Carta Sustainable Markets initiative), with the industry media and as part of our local community.

Our 2025 Goals

  • Reduce GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions on internal operations by 50%.
  • Reduce GHG emissions by 30% on all client work delivered.
  • Minimise waste & replace all single-use materials with circular economy equivalents.
  • Foster health and well-being in everything we do.

Our sustainability policy supports these goals, ensuring we play our part, are socially conscious and have a positive impact in all we do.

Transforming our work

Resetting Smyle’s business as usual embeds sustainability in core aspects of our work. 

Through Cycle we’re taking this further – helping brands to plan, design, activate and evaluate experiences that deliver their sustainability promises.
